It began with a 27-year-old promise and a Saturday afternoon realization.
After meeting in the halls of college and building a life in the United States, the pull of the island finally became an irresistible tide. For one of us, it was a return to the soil that raised her; for Jason, a native Floridian, it was a deep dive into a culture he had come to love through marriage, but was now ready to claim as home.
As we prepared our "return to the island" strategy—researching, investing, and dreaming—we began to look at the Dominican Republic through a new lens. We watched the growing wave of the diaspora returning home, bringing with them a hybrid identity that honors the past while innovating for the future.
Jason noticed something. In the global zeitgeist, Dominican pride is often distilled into a single, catchy phrase: "Plátano Power." While we love the plátano, Jason—having tasted his way through our recent trips—was baffled.
"Why is the plátano the only one with a marketing team?" he asked.
He had discovered the buttery depth of a perfect aguacate, the tart electricity of chinola, the earthy comfort of yautía, and the sophisticated soul of our cacao and coffee. The Dominican "conuco" (the traditional countryside farm) wasn't just producing one star; it was an entire ensemble cast of flavors that the world barely knew by name.
We realized that if we wanted to tell the story of the modern Dominican Republic, we had to personify the entire garden.
El Conuco was born to give a voice to the unsung heroes of the island. We aren't just selling merchandise; we are introducing the world to a "gang" of local fruits and produce, each with their own personality, swagger, and story.
The Coffee & Chocolate: The sophisticated elders of the group, representing the rich, mountainous terrain.
The Viveres: The grounded, hardworking heart of every Dominican breakfast.
The Tropical Fruits: The vibrant, colorful characters that bring the sweetness to island life.
Our brand is a celebration for the Diaspora and the native. It’s for the Dominican who never forgot the taste of a fresh lechosa, and for the partners, like Jason, who have been adopted by the island's warmth.
We’re moving beyond the single slogan and inviting everyone to step into the garden. Because while the plátano is powerful, the Conuco is a force of nature.
